A. It was, but neither side wanted to give up what was necessary to give up to avoid the conflict. Essentially, both the United States and Japan wanted the same trading regions, mostly Asia and especially China. Eventually, the United States decided to hurt Japanese influence on the region by cutting off their oil supply from the United States (most of their oil came from America at the time). Japan realized that if it didn't do something, it would lose the Asian trading region, and possibly its economy. So it chose to attack. It did so in the only way that it could do so and win, by sneak attack. Either one could have given up the region, or they could have chosen to share it in accordance with free trade ideas. I have an image taken from a book printed in 1941 reproduced from a 1858 print. Can I use it?
Q. The 1941 reproduction was privately printed and I can't find the original 1858 publisher. There was no credit given in the book.Only the title. Also this image has not shown up on the internet or other books. Do I need consent to use it? Who do I contact for permission?
Asked by James - Tue Jul 28 22:54:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. In regards to works created prior to Jan. 1, 1978, copyright protection automatically lasted for 28 years, and the copyright owner then had the option to renew for an additional 28 years. In most cases (with some exceptions), if a work was created more than 56 (28+28) years ago, it is in the public domain. 2009 - 56 = 1953 or older. You're alright. There was a new law put in place on 1/1/78 though. If a work was created on or after that date, the work is copyright protected for MUCH longer.

A. Pearl Harbor. 2,300 people doesn't seem like that big of a deal when you think of how many people die of completely preventable things like tuberculosis, malaria, dirty water or starvation every die. Or the people in Sudan. Or the 100,00+ innocent Iraqi civilians in the US's initial bombing. But the exciting things are what catch people's attention. For ex., breast cancer tons of attention, prostate cancer- cricket chirp.

Where can i find a video / dvd of the 1941 clydside blitz?
Q. I am trying to find a dvd or video of the 1941 Clydside blitz to give to my dad for Christmas. He saw quite recently in a newspaper an advertisment for just such a dvd, but can't remember which newspaper. The dvds contain historical newsreal footage of the events of the time. My father was bombed out during the blitz as a 14 year old and moved to London with his family who had previosly been coal merchant's in Glasgow. A. Most likely the same percentage as the general population. The military was relatively small and women were not really an official part of the military until 1941 anyway although they have served in combat since the Revolutionary War in the US, although they have served in combat roles all over the world since recorded history started.

How to get a title on a 1941 car?
Q. I bought an old 1941 car in Arkansas and received a bill of sale and title but the back of the title was filled up with previous owners who never put the title into their name just resold the car. I live in Texas and when I went to get a title they told me I have to get a bonded title because the car could be worth 15,000 dollars, but was purchased for a few hundred. I was told it would cost me 500 dollars just to get a title in my name. Is there another way or is this it?
Asked by Alicia S - Mon Jun 2 18:42:27 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Unless those previous owners were all dealers, then you're screwed. I would go back to the person you bought it from, tell him he either needs to transfer title into his name or refund you're money, because he has not done his duty as seller: providing you with a clean and clear title. It depends on how much you really want this car. Sounds like too much hassle to me.

A. Never studied this but there was a direct link between the famine of 1945 and the Japanese military and commercial policy. I suppose turning Indochina into an area of food supplies, stripping the country of food in order to feed its army and leaving them with no stores. If you are at Uni check out "A Sudden Rampage: The Japanese Occupation of Southeast Asia, 1941-1945 Journal article by Leszek Buszynski; Pacific Affairs, Vol. 75, 2002" or one of the online databases would pick out more stuff... good luck...

A. Australia had previously been a firmly 'British' country, looking to Britain for support and military assistance. In early December 1941, the Japanese attacked British and American colonies in Asia. The British were fighting desperately, and without allies, against Germany and not doing very well. They had little to spare to hold Singapore and thus keep the Japanese away from Australia. This is not quite true, they did have significant military assets at Singapore, but they lacked key weapons that compromised the whole, and British leadership was terrible. How hard is it to install recessed lighting in a house built in 1941?
Q. A union electrician will be assisting me, I just want to make sure the project isn't to difficult. Due to the age of the house.
Asked by newbssv3@sbcglobal.net - Wed May 13 15:44:48 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It depends on whether there is a second floor or not. The house probably has plaster walls. Cutting the opening for the light(s) will be simple enough but running the wire will be difficult if there is a floor above you. That means in order to run the wire you may have to cut some holes in the ceiling and walls to fish the wire along. It may even require you having to cut a notch the length of the wire. Feel free to contract me through my profile. I have some questions of my own I would have to ask before I elaborated any further.

A. Access to web information is best sought through "Day of Infamy." Roosevelt's speech coined that phrase. In that speech he makes reference to Japanese attacks on Hong Kong, Guam, the Phillipines and the Marshall Islands; but the method of attack was not specified. My guess is that the attacks were by either or both of aerial bombing and naval bombardment. I think it is highly unlikely that actual invasions occured until later. Therefore, my uneducated guess would be "None."
