In the Christian New Testament, the First Epistle of John is the fourth catholic or "general" epistle. Written in Ephesus about AD 100-110, the epistle is traditionally attributed to John the Evangelist, also the traditional author of the Gospel of John and the other two epistles of John. Not actually an epistle (or letter), the work is a sermon written to counter heresies that Jesus did not come "in the flesh," but only as a spirit. It also defines how Christians are to discern true teachers: by their ethics, their proclamation of Jesus in the flesh, and by their love. AuthorshipMain article: Authorship of the Johannine worksThe epistle is traditionally held to have been written by John the Evangelist, and probably also at Ephesus, and when the writer was in advanced age. The epistle's content, language and conceptual style indicate that it may have had the same author as the Gospel of John, 2 John, and 3 John. Some modern scholars believe that the apostle John wrote none of the New Testament books traditionally attributed to him. From Wikipedia under the

I believe it's one of the most controversial scriptures out there and I'm curious to know what other people think of it. It's the only scripture that proves the trinity yet most say it was not in the original Greek manuscripts and was added in later simply to prove the trinity. What's your take on it? Asked by Lovely - Mon Jan 26 03:55:48 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. First that it is not the only scripture that describes the trinity, and secondly that it is found in eight Greek manuscripts, and old Latin texts. It is also referenced by several early commentators. Answered by stellamatutina - Fri Apr 13 01:39:59 2007 If the Word of God is Jesus, not the Bible (John 1:1), what does that tell us about how to read the Bible?
Q. Some options: 1. God controlled the minds and hands of the authors like a divine puppeteer. 2. The Bible is a document written or adopted by the Church, expressing the historical knowledge and critical understanding of Jesus' authorized agents. 3. The Bible is a collection of ancient writings reflecting the worldview of provincial peoples of the eastern Mediterranean lands. 4. OR . . . ? Asked by Bruce - Mon Nov 10 22:07:01 2008 - - 24 Answers - 0 Comments A. It tells us not to deify the Bible. Christianity is not a religion of a book, like Judaism and Islam. It is the religion of the Word, Jesus Christ, the Son of God who lived and died among us, revealing God completely. The Church founded by Jesus extended the insights of the Hebrews in composing, collecting, and canonizing the scriptures of the New Testament. Acceptance by the Church meant that the writings were free of error. Nonetheless, Jesus himself is the source of truth, the living exemplar of God's revelation of himself. We find him through the Bible and through the faith of the Church who wrote the Bible. Answered by Geri - Mon Nov 10 22:45:10 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "1 John" |
