A. I John is a sermon not a tract. Vocabulary style and similar ideas relate this book to the the Fourth Gospel. However, 30 gospel words are not in I John(salvation, glory, judge, etc.) and 40 word in I Jn do not appear in John. If the author was the Evangelist, he might be the Apostle John in the judgment of many; but it is much more likely that he is the Elder of 2 and 3 John. Irenaeus, who accepted I and 2 Jn as scripture attributed them to John the disciple of the Lord, with the implication that this meant the son of Zebedee. By G. Johnston in Peake's Commentary on the Bible.
