Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (Arabic: علي بن أﺑﻲ طالب; Transliteration: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, [ʕaliː ibn ʔæbiː t̪ˤɑːlib]; 13 Rajab, 24 BH–21 Ramaḍān, 40 AH; approximately October 23, 598 or 600 or March 17, 599 – January 27, 661) was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and ruled over the Islamic Caliphate from 656 to 661. Sunni Muslims consider Ali the fourth and final of the Rashidun (rightly guided Caliphs), while Shi'a Muslims regard Ali as the first Imam and consider him and his descendants the rightful successors to Muhammad, all of which are members of the Ahl al-Bayt, the household of Muhammad. This disagreement split the Ummah (Muslim community) into the Sunni and Shi'a branches. Most records do indicate that during Muhammad's time, Ali was the only person born in the Kaaba sanctuary in Mecca, the holiest place in Islam. His father was Abu Talib ibn Abd al-Muttalib and his mother was Fatima bint Asad, but he was raised in the household of Muhammad, who himself was raised by Abu Talib, Muhammad's uncle. When Muhammad reported receiving a divine revelation, Ali was the first child to accept his message, dedicating his life to the cause of Islam. Ali migrated to Medina shortly after Muhammad did. Once there Muhammad told Ali that God had ordered him to give his daughter, Fatimah, to Ali in marriage. For the ten years that Muhammad led the community in Medina, Ali was extremely active in his service, leading parties of warriors on battles, and carrying messages and orders. Ali took part in the early raids against caravans from Mecca and later in almost all the battles fought by the early Muslim community. Ali was appointed caliph by the Sahaba (Muhammad's companions) in Medina after the assassination of the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan. He encountered defiance and civil war during his reign. In 661, Ali was attacked while praying in the mosque of Kufa, dying a few days later. In Muslim culture, Ali is respected for his courage, knowledge, belief, honesty, unbending devotion to Islam, deep loyalty to Muhammad, equal treatment of all Muslims and generosity in forgiving his defeated enemies, and therefore is central to mystical traditions in Islam such as Sufism. Ali retains his stature as an authority on Qur'anic exegesis, Islamic jurisprudence and religious thought. Ali holds a high position in almost all Sufi orders which trace their lineage through him to Muhammad. Ali's influence has thus continued throughout Islamic history. GNU Free Documentation License What are your opinions of the 2nd Ali vs Liston fight? Q. Lots of controversy with the count, the phantom punch, Ali not going to a neutral corner and Liston allegedly throwing the fight. All thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated. Asked by toughguy2 - Sun Aug 17 22:30:14 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. The term clusterfrick is bandied about often these days. But this fight was the penultimate clusterfrick, and you can place the blame solely on referee Joe Walcott. Ali scored a flash knockdown, it was real enough. Liston, as all fighters are taught, stayed on the canvas until he heard "9" from the referee. He never got a count and was ruled knocked out. The ref should have grabbed Ali by the gloves and led him to the corner, then administered the count. If Ali refused, then all he would be doing is buying Liston time to recover. But there was nothing fishy, the shot landed with more authority than what it appears. There's a reverse angle somewhere that shows a good punch, and you even see how it ripples through Liston. Answered by FailCat[atheist] v2.0 - Sat Oct 17 11:24:38 2009 What happened to George Foreman after losing to Muhammad Ali?
Q. I think Foreman was the Mike Tyson of his era before losing to Ali via 3rd round knockout. He could have fought Mike Tyson but when he returned to the ring at an older age, Mike Tyson was already incarcerated. Surprisingly, Foreman still has his knockout punch when he returned. Why did it took him so many years before going back to boxing? Your thoughts please. Asked by babybutterbean79 - Wed Jun 4 02:01:25 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. What happened is that George Foreman, perhaps the greatest fighter-style boxer of all time, could not handle losing. He had great faith in himself, and when he lost the fight, he lost that faith. Then, he had a epiphany and found a greater faith. Eventually, after many years, Foreman realized that he could face himself again. He decided to return to boxing, but with a very different attitude. He still wanted to win, and did realize his goal of another championship. Foreman lost to Ali, but there are few boxers in the whole history of the sport who could have accomplished that feat. Tyson would never have beaten Foreman , either with both in their prime, or in their later years. A swarmer always has trouble with a fighter.
